Solar Panel Installation in Wing Leighton Buzzard

Solar Panels for Shaded Roofs in Milton Keynes

A tree, a chimney or a neighbour's extension doesn't have to rule out solar panels. It does mean the system needs designing properly. On a conventional string, one shaded panel can drag down the output of the panels around it, so a roof that looks "mostly sunny" can still underperform.

Now EV designs solar systems for partly shaded roofs across Milton Keynes. We're a family-run, MCS certified installer based in Leighton Buzzard, around 12 miles away, with over 200 solar panel and battery installations completed. Every system is designed and fitted by our own team, never subcontracted.

Why shade matters more than people expect

Most solar panels are wired together in strings. Current through a string is limited by its weakest panel, so shade on one panel can reduce what the whole string produces. Shade also moves through the day and the year, so a roof clear at midday in June can be heavily shaded on a winter afternoon.

That's why our design starts with where the shade falls and when, as well as the size of the roof.

How we design around shade

  • Shade-tolerant panels. Split-cell panels, which use half-cut cells, and back-contact panels such as the Aiko Neostar 2S are built to keep producing when part of the panel is shaded.

  • Panel-level optimisation. Fitting Tigo optimisers to the affected panels, or a SolarEdge system with an optimiser on every panel, lets each one work independently, so a shaded panel no longer holds back the rest.

  • Careful string design. Panels that see the same shade pattern are grouped together, keeping the clear part of the roof working at full strength.

  • Honest layout choices. Sometimes the answer is fewer panels on the clearest part of the roof. We'll tell you if a section isn't worth covering.

  • Per-panel monitoring. With optimisers you can see each panel's output in the app, so you know the system is doing what it should.

Common shading problems we solve

  • Mature trees in gardens, streets and parkland

  • Chimneys, dormers and flues casting moving shadows

  • Neighbouring buildings or extensions shading part of the roof

  • Split roofs where one slope gets less sun than the other

How a shaded-roof installation works

  1. Enquiry. Send photos of your roof and anything that shades it through the contact form or WhatsApp.

  2. Consultation. We talk through the shading, your electricity use, and whether you'd like a battery.

  3. Quote and survey. You'll usually get a clear remote quote the same day, with a free survey to confirm the design.

  4. Power up. We install, commission and show you the monitoring app, and handle the DNO paperwork and MCS certificate.

Shaded roofs in Milton Keynes

Extensive parkland, linear parks and woodland planting have been part of Milton Keynes from the start, with millions of trees and shrubs planted across the city since the late 1960s. Planting that was young when the estates were built is now mature, and it shades roofs that were clear when the houses went up. This is why shade-aware design matters on so many Milton Keynes roofs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I have solar panels if my roof is partly shaded?

Usually, yes. The right panels, optimisers and layout mean a partly shaded roof can still be a good candidate. We'll tell you plainly if it isn't.

Do I need optimisers on every panel?

Not always. Often only the panels that get shaded need them. We'll recommend what your roof needs rather than a blanket approach.

Will shade from a tree get worse over time?

Trees grow, so we allow for that in the design and tell you which panels are most likely to be affected.

Can you tell how much shade my roof gets from photos? Photos are a good start for a remote quote. Where the design depends on the shade, we confirm it with a free on-site survey.
