At this point, everybody knows about the climate crisis, and most people want to do something about it. You may have considered solar panels for this purpose. Not only is it eco-friendly, relying on a sustainable source of sunlight to power the home, but it could even be cost-effective in the long term.

You might wonder why more people don’t have solar panels when they offer so many benefits. There are a couple of reasons for this, the first being that it is an investment, and many people don’t want to go to the effort of installing solar panels for long-term advantages in a home that they may not stay in. It’s understandable in this regard, as modern life is quite busy and expensive! The other common reason some people don’t get solar panels is that their homes may not be suitable.

Is Your Home Suitable for Solar Panels?

If you are interested in solar panels, consider first whether your home is suitable for them, as you want to know that you’ll get the most benefits out of the installation. The last thing you want is to get them only to realise your home doesn’t receive enough sunlight! To know whether your home is right for solar panels, ask yourself the following questions.

Which Direction Does Your Roof Face?

The direction of your roof makes a big difference and is a crucial factor when considering a solar panel installation. The best roofs for solar panels are those that are south-facing, as they will receive the most direct sunlight. A north-facing roof, on the other hand, isn’t a good roof for solar panels as it likely won’t receive enough sunlight. This does depend on where you are in the country though.

What Angle is Your Roof?

The pitch of your roof also matters. Ideally, your roof will be angled at about 35-40 degrees for best sunlight exposure. However, be aware that this isn’t paramount, as some flat roofs can get solar panel installations at an angle.

Does Your Roof Have Any Shaded Areas?

Naturally, you don’t want your roof to have any shade when installing solar panels, as you want to maximise the amount of power produced by the sun. If you have a large tree overhanging your house, your home might not be suitable. If your roof only has a slight amount of shading, you can probably get away with it, but speaking to a professional solar panel installer can be helpful here.

Are There Solar Panels on Other Homes on Your Street?

If you’re on a street with many similarly built houses and there are others with solar panels, that’s a decent indication they will work for you, considering the other points on this list, too. If you’re friendly with a neighbour who has solar panels, you could always speak to them about how beneficial it has been. Sometimes, one neighbour getting solar panels is enough to inspire the rest of the street, leading to a much more eco-friendly, self-sustaining area!
